What Are PTFE Lined Tanks and Vessels?
PTFE lined tanks and vessels are industrial storage or processing containers constructed from carbon steel or stainless steel on the outside, with a continuous layer of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) bonded or loose-fitted to all wetted surfaces on the inside. The metal shell provides the structural strength needed to withstand internal pressure, vacuum conditions and mechanical loads, while the PTFE lining acts as a chemically inert barrier that protects the metal from corrosive process fluids.
These tanks are used wherever aggressive chemicals must be stored, mixed, reacted or transported. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, agrochemicals, dyes and pigments, and water treatment rely heavily on PTFE lined vessels to maintain product purity and prevent equipment degradation.
How PTFE Lined Tanks Are Manufactured
The manufacturing process for PTFE lined tanks involves several precision steps that determine the quality and service life of the finished vessel:
- Shell fabrication: The metal tank shell is fabricated from carbon steel (IS 2062 / SA 516 Gr.70) or stainless steel (SS 304/316) to the required dimensions and pressure rating. All weld seams are ground smooth and inspected by radiography or ultrasonic testing.
- Surface preparation: The inner surface is grit-blasted to a specified roughness profile (typically Sa 2.5 per ISO 8501-1) to ensure proper adhesion of the lining.
- PTFE sheet preparation: PTFE sheets of the required thickness (typically 2.5 mm to 6 mm) are skived from sintered PTFE billets. One surface is chemically etched using sodium-naphthalene treatment to create a bondable surface.
- Lining application: The etched PTFE sheets are bonded to the prepared metal surface using a combination of adhesive and heat. For complex geometries such as nozzle penetrations and dished ends, the PTFE is carefully formed and welded using hot-air welding techniques.
- Spark testing: The completed lining is tested at high voltage (typically 10 kV per mm of lining thickness) to detect any pinholes, cracks or unbonded areas. Every square centimetre of the lining surface is tested.
- Pressure testing: The finished vessel is hydrostatically tested at 1.5 times the design pressure to verify structural integrity.
Types of Lined Tanks and Vessels
Storage Tanks
Vertical or horizontal cylindrical tanks used for bulk storage of corrosive chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrofluoric acid and various solvents. Capacities range from 500 litres to 50,000 litres and beyond. These tanks typically operate at atmospheric pressure or low positive pressure.
Reactor Vessels
Agitated vessels designed for chemical reactions involving corrosive reagents. They feature nozzle connections for agitator mounting, feed inlets, product outlets, temperature sensors, pressure relief and jacket connections. The PTFE lining must withstand the combined effects of chemical attack, temperature cycling and mechanical agitation. Reactor vessels supplied by a reputable PTFE lined tanks and vessels manufacturer in Maharashtra are engineered to handle pressures up to 10 kg/cm² and temperatures up to 200°C.
Mixing Vessels
Vessels used for blending, dilution and dissolution operations. They are similar to reactor vessels but typically operate at lower pressures and without heating or cooling jackets. Common applications include acid dilution, chemical dosing preparation and slurry mixing.
Columns and Towers
Vertical vessels used in distillation, absorption and scrubbing operations. PTFE lined columns are used in acid recovery systems, tail gas scrubbers and solvent purification units.
Lining Materials — PTFE, PFA, PVDF, FEP
While PTFE is the most widely used lining material, several fluoropolymer alternatives serve specific needs:
- PTFE: Universal chemical resistance, temperature range −200°C to +260°C, excellent non-stick properties. The standard choice for most applications.
- PFA (perfluoroalkoxy): Similar chemical resistance to PTFE but melt-processable, allowing seamless linings on complex shapes. Slightly higher permeation resistance. Preferred for ultra-high-purity applications in semiconductor and pharma industries.
- FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene): Good chemical resistance up to 200°C. Lower cost than PFA with similar melt-processing advantages. Commonly used for tank linings where temperature requirements are moderate.
- PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride): Excellent resistance to halogens, strong acids and oxidizers up to 150°C. Better mechanical strength than PTFE. Increasingly popular for ultra-pure water and semiconductor applications.
Advantages of PTFE Lined Tanks
PTFE lined tanks offer compelling advantages over alternative construction materials:
- Universal chemical resistance: PTFE resists virtually all industrial chemicals, eliminating the need for exotic alloys like Hastelloy, Inconel or tantalum.
- Cost effectiveness: A carbon steel tank with PTFE lining costs significantly less than a solid exotic-alloy vessel of equivalent capacity, while delivering comparable or superior corrosion resistance.
- Product purity: The non-reactive, non-contaminating surface of PTFE ensures that stored chemicals maintain their purity — critical in pharmaceutical and electronic-grade applications.
- Long service life: A properly manufactured and maintained PTFE lined tank can deliver 15 to 20 years of service, even in aggressive chemical environments.
- Relining capability: When the lining eventually wears, the metal shell can be relined rather than replaced, saving 40–60% compared to a new vessel.
- Thermal stability: PTFE maintains its properties across a wide temperature range without becoming brittle or degrading.
Temperature and Pressure Ratings
The operating limits of a PTFE lined tank depend on the lining material and construction method:
- Temperature: PTFE lining is suitable for continuous service up to 200°C (some grades handle up to 260°C with reduced mechanical properties). PFA handles up to 260°C, FEP up to 200°C, and PVDF up to 150°C.
- Pressure: Lined tanks are typically designed for operating pressures from full vacuum to 10 kg/cm²g (approximately 150 psi). Higher pressures are achievable with appropriate shell design.
- Vacuum service: Loose-lined vessels can handle moderate vacuum. For full vacuum service, bonded linings with anti-vacuum support rings are specified to prevent lining collapse.
Industry Applications
PTFE lined tanks and vessels find application across diverse industries:
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing: Storage of reaction intermediates, acid washing vessels, solvent holding tanks, and API (active pharmaceutical ingredient) processing vessels.
- Chemical manufacturing: Acid storage, alkali storage, reaction vessels for speciality and fine chemicals, and intermediate storage between process stages.
- Water treatment: Chemical dosing tanks for hydrochloric acid, ferric chloride, sodium hypochlorite and other treatment chemicals.
- Agrochemical production: Storage and mixing of corrosive raw materials used in pesticide and fertilizer manufacturing.
- Dyes and pigments: Reaction vessels and storage tanks handling acidic and alkaline dye intermediates.
- Metal finishing: Acid pickling tanks, anodising baths and electroplating solution storage.
Why Maharashtra Industries Choose PTFE Lined Tanks
Maharashtra is home to some of India's largest industrial clusters — the Thane-Belapur belt, MIDC Pune, MIDC Aurangabad (Waluj, Shendra AURIC, Chikalthana), MIDC Chandrapur and several others. The concentration of chemical, pharma and process industries in these zones creates sustained demand for corrosion-resistant equipment.
Local availability of a PTFE lined tanks and vessels manufacturer in Maharashtra offers distinct advantages: shorter lead times, lower freight costs, easier site visits during manufacture, and faster response for warranty claims or relining work. For plants in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, sourcing from within the state avoids the delays and logistics challenges of procuring from distant manufacturing hubs.
